Lesson #3084 - Science The World
When I was in grad school, I was the only white man (and for a little while, the only white person) in my advisor's research group. The group was incredibly diverse. It was a very different feeling, being that person, a feeling that every white man honestly should have to feel for a while. It gives you perspective. That group was also ridiculously talented, and put out some great work (and continues to do so). It's not a surprise - check your history, some of the best and greatest scientific achievements have been produced when a broad cultural background was offering and contributing ideas and techniques. I only hope some people keep this in mind based on recent events - we're fighting for people, which partly means we're also fighting for science, which partly also means we're fighting for ourselves. Science succeeds without borders. If fighting for others isn't reason enough and you need personal motivation, keep that in mind.
