With a sudden increase in volume like that but no extra blood, wouldn't you have a sudden reversal in the direction of blood flow? I suppose the Grinch's physiology could handle such an event anyway. I mean, if his head wasn't screwed on just right, who knows what his body was capable of. That's the most likely answer of all, anyway.
